The Tax on Boatmen.

EoiToit BainsH Colonist: —During a visit of the Governor to our town last spiing, previous 10 the letting of the contract for building the inule trail to Spuz/em, a committee of our merchanls, at the Governor's request, called upon him to consult as to the best means of raising'ft revenue to pay for the building of the tnen contemplated road. It was determined that the best means woulil be to cliarg* a toll of one-half oeiil per pound on all merchandise passing over the road, provided.a similar toll was placed on the Lillooet nn'd'Hope routes; the tolls eollected on each route to go to the formation of a fund for the benefit of tlial particular route—for instance, the a.nounl collected on the Vale route -ivas to go to the Yale fund ; iha', ou the Douglas route to the l)ou!,'las fund; and that on the Hope route to the Hope fund. Some time afterwards the (Jovi-nior wrote to the so-called Town Councd id Vale, asking the peO[)le of that place to advi.io him to (.■oUect on all goo'ls shipped by water as well as over llie trail. This the Town Council did without the sanction of the people. The consequence was that, in the Governor's proclatnatioii of the loth October, the following paragraph appeared i;i relation to the la.v of one stiil-hug on every fifty pounds weight, '•and upon every fifty pounds weight avordupuis (if all g'jods taken or carried beyond Fort Vale, by land or water. In the direction of .Spuz'/eni, and of all goods taken or carried beyond Foit Hupe. by fini(/, in the ilirectiuti of Boston liar or Similkaineen.''

Now, Mr. Editor, can you inform the thickheaded people ol Vale wliy it is lliat orders have been received by the magistrate at Fort Hope in direct violation of ttic above clause in the Governor's piocl.im.iiioii ot the 15th October, IStiO, and also in direct viola-liDii of the (Juvernor's promise to the jieople of Yah'. Oriler to collect the i cent per lb. toll at Fort Hope on all boats passing there intending to proceed past Vale in tho direction of Spu/zi'm," by water, swells the Hope fund by stealing the Yale toll.
